RetroPerc is a safer anatomically precise kidney puncture for PCNL

Category: Health, Medical and Biotech
Subcategory: Minimally Invasive Medicine

From the winners: “Prior to RetroPerc, 99.9% of renal punctures were created by advancing a needle from ‘outside to inside’ direction. RetroPerc allows urologists to advance a needle from the ‘inside to outside’ direction, thus improving the safety of the kidney puncture for PCNL.”

“As a surgical trainee I learned an old, version of this current submission. Its concept was superior to the standard (outside to inside) puncture method, but it had several design flaws. One day after a frustrating experience in the OR I thought back to that old way. The ‘aha’ moment happened while at my desk in my office when the idea came to deploy the puncture wire through an endoscope. The original product/procedure concept had the wire deployed through a catheter. By using a scope we could visually direct the wire path from inside the kidney.”

“RetroPerc allows the surgeon to puncture a kidney for the PCNL procedure in the ‘inside-to-outside’ direction, which is anatomically superior to the oppositive ‘outside to inside’ direction. This reduces bleeding, radiation requirements, is easier to teach and learn than the ‘outside to inside’ puncture methods, etc.”
