From the winners: “Mammography Quality Evaluation (MQE) uses 11 criteria of mammography quality that enhance radiographers’ skills and mammography process. Radiographers can adjust operations referring to MQE’s quality warnings and visual information. MQE helps hospitals to acquire quality mammograms and minimizes the chance of patient recall for retaking mammograms.”

“According to Taiwan‘s survey in 2017, 20% of mammograms have quality issues that need to recall patients for retaking mammograms by hospitals. Reviewing mammography quality is still considered a manual task and time-consuming. Mammography Quality Evaluation (MQE) combines deep learning classifications and computer vision techniques to assess quality with lightweight AI computing, which is realized based on 11 criteria of positioning and compression issues. MQE analyzes a single digital mammogram or pairs of mammograms at the same laterality. Moreover, this system provides inadequate-quality warnings for local areas and an entire mammogram.”

“Mammography Quality Evaluation (MQE), the first AI system, provides automatic and objective quality assessments. With optimized algorithms, MQE can run on a PC or mobile device like an iPad and be deployed on mammogram trucks to service citizens in remote areas.”

“MQE provides quality warnings within 10 seconds for a mammogram and generates visual information to indicate problem areas. Based on those features, radiographers can adjust operations to amend the problems during mammography. MQE reduces the number of patient recalls for the hospital, and it is a great resource to help hospitals train new radiographers in the mammography process.”
