340 organizations ask Congress for telehealth to stay

Today, 340 companies signed a letter sent to Congress to urge leaders to make COVID-19-related telehealth flexibilities permanent.

Representing all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, the signees are seeking to stop the potential for telehealth flexibilities to disappear, should Congress fail to act before the COVID-19 public health emergency expires, according to a news release.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Congress waived statutory barriers to allow for expanded access to telehealth, offering federal agencies the flexibility to allow healthcare providers to deliver care virtually. The letter says that those flexibilities will immediately go away if Congress doesn’t act.

The 340 stakeholders who signed the letter urged Congress to remove obsolete restrictions on the location of the patient so care can be accessed at home, maintain and enhance Dept. of Health & Human Services (HHS) authority to determine appropriate providers for…

Support grows for return of medtech reps to hospitals

Twenty-six more medical and surgical societies and healthcare associations have endorsed guidelines for the safe return of medtech company representatives to healthcare facilities during the coronavirus pandemic.

The guidance, released in May by AdvaMed, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the American Hospital Association (AHA), builds on the April 17 joint statement by AHA, AORN, the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Anesthesiologists on the resumption of elective surgeries.

The guidance outlines ways to support the collaboration between healthcare personnel and medtech representatives as healthcare facilities consider when and how to safely resume elective surgeries paused during the pandemic.

Several medical device companies, especially those in orthopedics, have suffered major drops in sales since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recommended in March that healthcare providers postp…

Poll: Patients want to return to the doctor

AdvaMed said polling data confirmed that nearly half of American adults surveyed said they or someone in their household postponed or skipped medical care as a result of COVID-19.

The poll, released yesterday by the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that 48% of those adults or adults in their household had to put off medical care during the pandemic. It also revealed that 68% of those who postponed care expect to receive that care in the next three months, while 11% of respondents reported worsened health as a result of the delay in care.

“We already knew that too many patients have been going without the care that is absolutely vital to their health, and what this poll confirms is that patients themselves are anxious and ready to continue the care that was put on pause because of COVID-19,” AdvaMed president & CEO Scott Whitaker said in a news release. “It’s time for these essential medical procedures to resume. Last week, we joined AORN and AHA in releasing…

Groups release guidance on medtech reps’ return to hospitals

A handful of medical organizations released guidelines today on the safe return of medtech company representatives to healthcare facilities during the coronavirus pandemic.

The guidance released today by AdvaMed, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the American Hospital Association (AHA) builds on the April 17 joint statement by AHA, AORN, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists on the resumption of elective surgeries.

Several medical device companies, especially those in orthopedics, have suffered major drops in sales since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recommended in March that healthcare providers postpone elective procedures until further notice to preserve personal protective equipment. The CMS decision followed one by the American College of Surgeons calling for hospitals to “minimize, postpone or cancel” elective procedures until the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak s…
