The MedTech Conference by AdvaMed to be a mixture of in-person and virtual

To hold an event or not to hold a live event. Medtech trade association AdvaMed chose both for The Medtech Conference, which takes place next week.

The September 27–30 conference includes a mixture of virtual presentations and in-person events in Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis. AdvaMed CEO Scott Whitaker mentioned several conference agenda highlights during a news conference today:

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel will deliver an afternoon keynote on Monday, September 27, in Washington, D.C. CMS’s chief medical officer Dr. Lee Fleisher will discuss his work during a late morning talk on September 27. FDA’s Virtual CDRH Town Hall — a perennial favorite at the conference — will take place virtually on the evening of September 27. The in-person Minneapolis events September 29–30 include a who’s who of medtech CEOs, including Abiomed’s Michael R. Minogue (also the present AdvaMed board chair), Edwards Lifesciences’ Michael…

AdvaMed wants feds to give medical supply chain priority

Medtech trade group AdvaMed wants the Biden administration to put the transport of medical supplies at the top of its list to address supply chain problems at ports worldwide.

On his first day in office, Biden issued an executive order that promised, in part, to secure the pandemic supply chain and create a U.S. manufacturing base to fill the strategic national stockpile. The stockpile was found to have expired N95 masks and to be generally unprepared for the onslaught of pleas from frontline workers desperate for personal protective equipment (PPE).

CMS delays Medicare payments for breakthrough devices until December

Medicare coverage for FDA-designated breakthrough medical devices will have to wait several more months, despite broad support.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final rule on Medicare Coverage of Innovative Technology (MCIT) in January, granting coverage for breakthrough devices the same day as their FDA approvals, for up to four years.

Immediately upon taking office, the Biden administration asked federal agencies to consider delaying the effective date of rules published in the Federal Register to review questions of fact, law and policy the rules may raise. CMS officials decided that coverage of breakthrough devices warranted further review.

Biden to put $12B toward COVID testing

(Image courtesy of the White House)

The Biden administration today pledged $10 billion for school COVID-19 screenings and $2.25 billion for screenings and diagnostic testing among underserved populations.

The money is part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act that Biden signed into law last week.

The Department of Health and Human Services will divvy up the $10 billion among the states to fund screening tests of teachers, staff and students to help schools to reopen safely for in-person instruction. Screening tests are used to test asymptomatic people for COVID-19. The money will be deployed quickly to help schools reopen for the remainder of this year, according to an HHS news release.

DTW Podcast: Insulet CEO Petrovic sees abundance of CGM opportunities

Insulet CEO Shacey Petrovic shares vision for OmniPod insulin delivery.

Medtech start ups developing continuous glucose monitors have caught the eye of at least one potential – and powerful – partner – Insulet Corp.

In an interview with the DeviceTalks Weekly Podcast, CEO Shacey Petrovic said the maker of the OmniPod insulin-delivery device sees partnering with other companies as the likely path to creating a single device capable of reading glucose levels and delivering insulin. Insulet last year announced partnerships with DexCom and Abbott.

“There are some really interesting technologies on the horizon,” Petrovic said. “There might be 40 early-stage CGMs in development so we’ll see how the market plays out. But we couldn’t be more delighted with our partnerships with Abbott and Dexcom.”

The partnerships give Insulet access to technology that’s able to measure glucose levels in…

MedTech 100 roundup: Industry rebounds from massive dip

The medtech industry saw its largest fall in several months last week, but it has rebounded slightly after a couple of bad weeks.

A strong start to 2021 hit a skid at the end of February and carried over into March, with MassDevice‘s MedTech 100 index hitting its lowest point on March 8 (102.16). It had only notched an all-time best of 110.96 on Feb. 15, leading to a precipitous fall not seen since October.

While the heights of last month have not yet been returned to, the industry has shown signs of bouncing back. The index ended the week (March 12) at 104.62, marking a 1.3% rise from the 103.3-point mark set one week before (March 5).

The industry remains in a strong position and one that is particularly stronger than it was at this time a year ago, as the index is now 13.3% up on the pre-COVID-19 pandemic high of 92.32 set on Feb. 19, 2020.

Nearly one year ago, on March 23, 2020, as the pandemic took hold, the industry sat at 62.13 points on th…
