Better Therapeutics (Nasdaq:BTTX) announced today that it appointed Frank Karbe as its new president and CEO.

San Francisco-based Better Therapeutics develops prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs) based on nutritional cognitive behavioral therapy (nCBT) to address the root causes of cardiometabolic diseases.

Philips names Willem Appelo as chief operations officer

Willem Appelo [Image courtesy of Philips]Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG) today announced that it has named Willem Appelo as chief operations officer, effective October 1.

Appelo is slated to join the Amsterdam-based company’s executive committee on July 18. He will succeed Sophie Bechu as chief operations officer, who will continue to work on project-based initiatives until her retirement in January 2023.

Appelo previously worked as the interim supply chain officer and has worked with private equity firms in the medtech industry. Prior to that, he was the VP of supply chain strategy, innovation and development and VP of supply chain medical devices at Johnson & Johnson.

BD appoints new president of medical segment

BD (NYSE:BDX) announced today that it appointed Simon Campion as EVP and president of the company’s medical segment.

Franklin Lakes, New Jersey-based BD announced in March that Alberto Mas, who held the same roles Campion will assume, intended to retire. Campion’s position will be made effective on July 1, 2022.

Mas, 60, informed the company of his intent to retire in a move that will be made effective at the end of the company’s fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2022. He spent a total of nearly 30 years at BD across a number of leadership positions.

Campion will report to Chair, CEO and President Tom Polen and his responsibilities include global strategic, operational and commercial performance for the medical segment at BD, according to a news release. He has served as EVP and president of the interventional segment for BD since September 2018 and will continue to lead that business in the interim until the company names a successor.

U of Maryland scientist to set up NIH’s new Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)

U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it formed a new research project agency for health.

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra announced the formal establishment of the Advanced Research Project Agency for Health (ARPA-H) as an independent entity within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Adam H. Russell was appointed as acting deputy director, effective next month.

AdvaMed joins Biden’s Joint Supply Chain Resilience Working Group

AdvaMed executive Abby Pratt has joined the executive committee for the Biden administration’s Joint Supply Chain Resilience Working Group, the medtech industry association said today.

The working group’s members from government and industry will assist with implementation of the National Strategy for a Resilient Public Health Supply Chain.

Pratt oversees supply chain issues as SVP in AdvaMed’s global policy department.

Google Health hires FDA’s chief digital health officer

Former FDA Chief Digital Health Officer Global Strategy and Innovation Bakul Patel has started a new job with Google after 13 years with the regulatory agency.

Patel became senior director, global digital health strategy and regulatory for Google Health earlier this month, he said on LinkedIn.

Patel recounted highlights of his “incredible journey since 2008” at the FDA, including the introduction of functionality-based regulations in the FDA’s mobile medical apps guidance, working with international agencies to define and regulate software-as-a-medical-device (SaMD), developing the Digital Health Software Precertification (Pre-Cert) Program and launching the Digital Health Center of Excellence.

Here’s what’s next for Insulet after the launch of Omnipod 5, CEO change

The future for Insulet (Nasdaq:PODD) has a much different look on some level than it did about a week ago.

A massive shake-up at the executive level came on May 5 when Shacey Petrovic announced that she would step down as the company’s president and CEO for personal reasons.

Petrovic will stay on as a board member at the Acton, Massachusetts-based automated insulin delivery system developer, and will assume an advisory role to support the leadership transition to former ResMed President of Sleep and Respiratory Care Jim Hollingshead, who will succeed her.

While the executive makeup will change come June 1, Insulet’s efforts to innovate in the diabetes space won’t be halted, as the company will continue to plug along under new leadership, EVP of Innovation and Strategy Eric Benjamin said during a keynote event at DeviceTalks Boston.

Johnson & Johnson’s Consumer Health chief to run new stand-alone company

Thibaut Mongon — EVP and Worldwide Chair of Consumer Health at Johnson & Johnson since 2019 — will be CEO of the business when it spins out as a stand-alone company.

J&J (NYSE: JNJ) expects the spinoff to be complete in 2023, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and employee representatives.
