Levita Magnetics announced today that the FDA approved its MARS magnetic-assisted robotic surgery platform.

Mountain View, California-based Levita designed its MARS minimally invasive surgical platform for the high-volume abdominal surgery market. It combines magnets and machines to reduce the number of incisions, enabling complete control during laparoscopic procedures.

The system comes in a compact footprint designed to fit into existing operating rooms. It builds on the success of the company’s first commercial product, the Levita Magnetic Surgical System. Levita designed MARS to deliver the same patient benefits while empowering surgeons with increased control of surgical instruments.

“Today marks a significant milestone in Levita’s mission to provide more patients access to state-of-the-art surgical technology. MARS is poised to revolutionize surgical options for a broad range of patients,” said Dr. Alberto Rodriguez-Navarro, surgeon, founder, and CEO of Levita Magnetics. “With this FDA clearance, we eagerly anticipate making a substantial impact across the value chain.”

More about the Levita MARS system

According to the company, it designed MARS to deliver a “triple impact.” The company hopes for patients to experience less-invasive surgery with reduced incisions. This results in less pain, faster recovery and fewer scars.

Meanwhile, surgeons benefit from a system that provides full control in multiple facets. They can control the laparoscopic view, reducing the need for an additional assistant. Additionally, the control of the Magnetic Surgical System enables the retraction of large tissues and organs, including the liver, gallbladder, prostate and colon.

Levita said that hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers can benefit from increased efficiency, too. They’ll also reap the rewards of more effective OR personnel deployment and a differentiated patient procedure.

“MARS by Levita has the potential to reshape the surgical industry and forever change medical innovation. Our pioneering MARS platform gives patients and surgeons a transformative tool that will usher in a fundamental shift in surgery for years to come,” said Chair Maria Sainz. “Levita’s system can aid in surgeon proficiency and efficiency, and can reduce the need for assistive personnel, signaling a major achievement not only for Levita but for surgical care.”
