Philips treats first patient will 3D intracardiac echocardiography catheter

Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG) announced today that it treated the first patient with its real-time, 3D intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) catheter.

Dr. Mohamad Adnan Alkhouli performed a left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedure with Philips’ VeriSight Pro platform at the Minneapolis-based Mayo Clinic.

The real-time 3D Philips intracardiac echocardiography catheter, when combined with Philips’ premium cardiology ultrasound system (EPIQ CVx), offers 2D and 3D live image guidance for a wide range of procedures for structural heart disease and electrophysiology, according to a news release.

VeriSight Pro uses the same ultrasound technology used in standard live ultrasound imaging for heart disease and electrophysiology but miniaturized to fit on the tip of a 1.98 mm-diameter catheter that can be navigated to the patient’s heart through their vasculature. The procedure does not require general anesthesia.

MedTech 100 roundup: Nearing new highs once again

Having hit a downturn as the summer neared, the medtech industry is now consistently on the rise as June comes to a close.

MassDevice‘s MedTech 100 Index — which includes stocks of the world’s largest medical device companies — finished the week (June 25) at 113.42 points, producing a 2.5% rise from the 110.64-point mark set one week prior (June 18). In all, the industry has risen 5.9% over the past three weeks.

The recent upswing shows no signs of slowing after the industry’s progress came to a halt with a -1.4% dip earlier this month. The index looks set to close in on the 114.58-point mark set in April, marking the industry’s all-time best performance.

Even with some recent setbacks, medtech’s performance continues to reflect an overall rebound from the struggles brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, too. The industry has registered a 22.9% rise from the pre-pandemic high of 92.32 (set on Feb. 19, 2020), plus a 82.6% increase from the mid-pandemic low …

Philips CPAP recall could be an opportunity for ResMed, analysts say

Baird analysts say that the recall of certain sleep and respiratory devices by Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG) may benefit ResMed (NYSE:RMD).

Earlier this month, Amsterdam-based Philips provided an update on the April 26 recall for some bi-level PAP and CPAP ventilator devices with a foam component problem, with the company expecting revenue headwinds in its sleep and respiratory care business to be compensated by the performances of its other businesses. It elected not to change financial guidances provided with the initial recall announcement.

Analysts at Baird, however, noted that there is an opportunity for ResMed to get a jump on Philips amid the recall with its respiratory products, although there is a high degree of difficulty as far “meaningfully capitalizing on this disruption,” and few clear answers exist right now.

ResMed, one of the top-performing stocks of 2020, saw a 4.6% rise from market open to market close on June 14, the day Philip…

Philips issues recall for foam component in some sleep and respiratory care devices

Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG) today provided an update on the recall for specific bi-level PAP and CPAP ventilator devices.

On April 26, Philips issued a recall notification for specific Philips bi-level positive airway pressure (bi-level PAP), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and mechanical ventilator devices due to potential risks related to the polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam component in the devices.

According to a news release, the majority of the affected devices within the advised five-year service life are in the first-generation DreamStation product family. The complaint rate registered at 0.03% in 2020, Philips said.

The Amsterdam-based company determined through testing that there are possible risks to users related to the PE-PUR sound abatement foam component, including the possibility of the foam degrading into particles that may enter the device’s air pathway and be ingested by the user.

Philips’ trade secret suit against Chinese companies can proceed

A federal judge has ruled that two companies in China and a U.S. company must face a trade secrets lawsuit by Philips.

Philips claims that two former employees who joined GL Leading, an Aurora, Ill.-based firm allegedly formed from a pair of related companies in China, stole proprietary information about certain Philips’ X-ray tubes. Philips is also suing those former employees, Jose Buan and  Sherman Jen, as well as the Chinese companies, Kunshan Yiyuan Medical Technology and Kunshan Guoli Electronic Technology,

Philips alleges that in late December 2017, Buan copied more than 800 of Philips’ files, “including trade secret and other confidential business information” onto portable drives, according to the order by Judge Marvin E. Aspen.

“A subsequent investigation revealed that Buan took ‘a trove’ of additional files containing ‘confidential and trade secret technical and business information pertaining to the 2XXX series X…

How 5G could affect medtech

The latest standard of broadband technology continues to make waves in 2021. But what about medtech?

Wireless tech companies such as Qualcomm are predicting download speeds as high as 10 gigabits per second as next-generation 5G cellular networks roll out worldwide.

The open question in medtech is how quickly companies will take advantage of the super-speedy connectivity for their own products.

“5G is about bringing more capacity and speed to the pipes,” said Don Jones, a member of the advisory council at BrightInsight and a veteran of the digital healthcare space. Jones spent more than 11 years building Qualcomm’s healthcare group.

“What you have to analyze is, ‘Can healthcare take advantage of what essentially amounts to these bigger pipes?’ Because more data can be shoved through them with m…
