Drug companies agree not to release COVID-19 vaccine until it’s ready

Executives from nine different drug companies today announced a pledge to ensure safety with a potential COVID-19 vaccine.

The CEOs of AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN), BioNTech (NSDQ:BNTX), GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK), Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), Merck (NYSE:MRK), Moderna (NSDQ:MRNA), Novavax (NSDQ:NVAX), Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) and Sanofi (NYSE:SNY), all of whom are developing vaccine candidates, all signed the pledge, which vows to “uphold the integrity of the scientific process” as they pursue regulatory approvals of the first vaccines for the novel coronavirus.

MedTech 100 roundup: Another high as stocks tick up

For the third consecutive week, stocks in the medtech industry reached heights not yet seen since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

MassDevice’s MedTech 100 Index — which includes stocks of the world’s largest medical device companies — sat at 89.65 points at the end of last week (Aug. 7). Overall, medtech stocks saw a 0.72% increase from the 89.01-point total at the same time a week prior (July 31).

On Aug. 5, the index reached 90.45 points, marking its highest point since that pre-pandemic high, with the previous mid-pandemic high (90.37) coming last week.

The most recent high mark represents just a -2% dip from the Feb. 19 high point of 92.32, marking the smallest margin of decline over the past five months.

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Index saw a 2.5% increase from July 31 to Aug. 7, and the Dow Jones Index fared even better, positng a 3.8% rise over the same period of time.

Pfizer to make Gilead’s remdesivir COVID-19 treatment

Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) announced today that it entered into a multi-year agreement with Gilead Sciences (NSDQ:GILD) to manufacture and supply its antiviral remdesivir treatment.

The investigational antiviral remdesivir will be manufactured by Pfizer under the agreement as the company becomes one of the multiple external manufacturing organizations supporting efforts to scale up the supply of the investigational treatment for COVID-19. Pfizer will offer contract manufacturing services at its McPherson, Kan.-based facility to supply remdesivir for Gilead.

MedTech 100 roundup: Industry remains on the rise

The medtech industry continues to climb back up in the markets, following a landmark week with another move up toward its pre-COVID-19-pandemic highs.

MassDevice’s MedTech 100 Index — which includes stocks of the world’s largest medical device companies — sat at 89.29 points at the end of last week (July 24). That total represents just a -3.3% dip from the Feb. 19 high point of 92.32, marking the smallest margin of decline over the past five months.

On July 22, the index reached 90.11 points, marking its highest point since that pre-pandemic high and the first and only time it has eclipsed 90 points since that day in February.

Medtech stocks saw a 0.44% increase from the 88.9-point total at the same time a week prior (July 17), highlighting a slight improvement after last week saw the industry inch back toward that pre-pandemic high.

Two U.S. government agencies today announced an agreement with Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) for production and delivery of 100 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, along with the U.S. Defense Dept., agreed to the large-scale production and U.S. delivery deal once Pfizer’s vaccine is successfully manufactured and approved. In addition to the 100 million doses initially agreed upon. the U.S. government will be able to acquire an additional 500 million doses.

Results, published in The Lancet, revealed that the vaccine is safe, causes few side effects and induces strong immune responses in both parts of the immune system in the fight against COVID-19, which is caused by SARS-CoV-2.

Oxford researchers report positive early trial results for COVID-19 vaccine candidate

Researchers at Oxford University say early-stage results from a Phase I/II clinical trial of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate display safety and strong immune responses.

Results, published in The Lancet, revealed that the vaccine is safe, causes few side effects and induces strong immune responses in both parts of the immune system in the fight against COVID-19, which is caused by SARS-CoV-2.

A T cell response (a cellular immune response) was provoked within 14 days of vaccination and an antibody response within 28 days. Researchers say that an ideal SARS-CoV-2 vaccine should be effective after one or two vaccinations, confer protection for a minimum of 6 months and reduce onward transmission of the virus to contacts.

Biopharmaceutical companies pledge more than $1 billion to develop new antibiotics

More than 20 biopharmaceutical companies around the world have pledged more than $1 billion toward the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Action Fund that launched today.

Pledges include $100 million from Pfizer and $50 million from Boehringer Ingelheim.

An initiative of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA), the fund’s goal is to bring two to four new antibiotics to market by 2030. The collaboration between pharmaceutical companies, philanthropies, development banks, and multilateral organizations is meant to re-invigorate antibiotic development — which has been lagging amid a rapid rise in antibiotic-resistant infections.
