Chiang is an assistant professor of medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College and director of the Endoscopic Bariatric Program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, both in Philadelphia. He has a master’s degree in public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Chiang holds the unusual position of chief medical social media officer of Jefferson Health, reflecting his advocacy for using online channels for education and outreach about GI-related conditions and current events in healthcare.

Medtronic touts data for MiniMed 780G insulin pump in children

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) reported positive one-year, real-world clinical data for its MiniMed 780G insulin pump platform in children.

Data came from a subset of 3,211 pediatric and adolescent patients (15 years old and below) with type 1 diabetes using the MiniMed 780G system with the Guardian Sensor 3 in Europe.

Medtronic warns on Percept PC implantable neurostimulators

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) has issued an urgent field safety notice in Europe to warn of issues with its Percept PC implantable neurostimulator.

The notice’s purpose stands to inform customers of the potential failure with the Model B35200 Percept PC INS following a cardioversion procedure.

Fridley, Minnesota-based Medtronic determined that cardioversion may damage the electronics in the Percept PC INS device, making the INS unresponsive and non-functional, leaving the INS incapable of being turned back on, according to the notice. If therapy ceases, it will likely cause the return of disease symptoms.

In some cases, symptoms may return with a greater intensity than previously experienced by the user prior to implantation, which, in rare cases, can constitute a medical emergency.

Intuitive Surgical executives today said delays and price increases are working their way through the medtech supply chain, likely resulting in higher production costs in the months ahead and the potential for delayed development and regulatory activity.

“I don’t think I can say it’s getting better. it’s a difficult situation and will continue for some time. … I’m not sure I want to say the inflation word, that it has hit us and is here to stay, but we are seeing some suppliers raise costs,” CFO Marshall Mohr said on a conference call to discuss the surgical robotics maker’s performance in the third quarter.

Report: Medtronic in negotiations to buy Israel-based insulin pump maker Triple Jump

Reports in Israel say that Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) has entered talks to acquire Triple Jump for $300 million.

Calcalist reported that the proposed acquisition, which is in advanced negotiations, follows a 2020 investment into Triple Jump made by Medtronic that also included an option to purchase the insulin pump maker.

Women researchers receive a fraction of funding from the world’s biggest medtech companies

The gender divide in medtech extends beyond leadership and into funding for investigational studies by U.S. physicians.

Only 6.7% of physicians who received research payments from the world’s largest medical device companies in 2020 were women, according to an analysis of Medical Design & Outsourcing’s Big 100 list of medtech companies and CMS Open Payments data.

Among the 20 medical device companies that fund research by U.S. physicians are 3M, Abbott, BD, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson (dba J&J Surgical Vision and J&J Vision Care), Medtronic (dba Medtronic, Medtronic Minimed, Medtronic USA, Medtronic Vascular), Royal Philips (dba Philips Electronics), Stryker and Zimmer Biomet.

Together, those companies paid $3.9 million to 312 doctors in 2020, but only 21 were women, receiving a collective $402,600.

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) announced that it received CE mark approval in Europe for its Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system.

Fridley, Minnesota-based Medtronic’s CE mark covers urologic and gynecologic procedures, which make up approximately half of all robotic procedures performed today, according to a news release.

Fridley, Minnesota-based Medtronic’s CE mark covers urologic and gynecologic procedures, which make up approximately half of all robotic procedures performed today, according to a news release. Last month, the company said it had been expecting to receive such approval soon before it finally came yesterday.

Hugo, which in May garnered FDA investigational device exemption, offers a modular, multi-quadrant platform designed for a broad range of surgical procedures with wristed instruments, 3D visualization and surgical video capture option in Touch Surgery Enterprise. Medtronic points to study showing that multi-hour AFib increases stroke risks

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) announced today that a study using its continuous rhythm monitoring device showed AFib’s relationship with ischemic stroke.

Fridley, Minnesota-based Medtronic’s data covers 466,635 patients included in the Optum unidentified electronic health record (EHR) and Medtronic CareLink databases. Findings were published online in JAMA Cardiology, according to a news release.

Of the large population of patients, 891 who had Medtronic cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) capable of continuous rhythm monitoring sustained both an ischemic stroke and received 120 day of continuous monitoring prior to that stroke. The study defined AFib exposure as lasting 5.5 hours or more on any given day.

In total, 76.5% of those subjects had no AFib meeting the threshold over either 30-day period observed (1 to 30 days prior and 91 to 120 prior to the event), while 16% had at least one day with 5.5 hours or more of AFib in both per…
