The best medtech innovations of 2023

The Galien Foundation’s 2023 Prix Galien USA Awards recognized a first-of-its-kind cancer diagnostic and other medtech innovations.

Announced last week, the Galien Foundation’s annual Prix Galien awards highlight devices, biotechnology and pharmaceutical products designed to improve the human condition.

“The outstanding quality of the submissions is a testament to the promising future of the life sciences industries,” said former Johnson & Johnson CEO and Chair Alex Gorsky — one of the awards jurors — in a news release announcing the nominees. 

Last year’s winners included Cala Health, Abbott, Edwards Lifesciences and Roche. (See all of 2022’s nominees here, including many that were nominated again in 2023.)

4 top drug discovery innovations of 2022

Prix Galien

Late last year, the Galien Foundation highlighted several drug discovery innovations in its annual Prix Galien USA Award Winners, which specifically highlighted drugs from Regeneron and Amgen as well as a platform from Exscientia and the incubators BioLabs and LabCentral.

The foundation recently hosted a webinar featuring several executives from the respective winning companies discussing their view on their respective drug discovery innovations.

1. Inmazeb: The first FDA-approved Ebola drug

The Galien Foundation chose Regeneron’s (Nasdaq:REGN) Inmazeb (atoltivimab, maftivimab and odesivimab-ebgn) as the best biotechnology product of 2022. The antibody cocktail became the first FDA-approved treatment for Ebola (Zaire Ebolavirus) for pediatric and adult patients in 2020.

The Galien Foundation has selected Regeneron’s (Nasdaq:REGN) Inmazeb (atoltivimab, maftivimab and odesivimab-ebgn) as the best biotechnology product of 2022 and Amgen’s (Nasdaq:AMGN) Lumakras as the best pharmaceutical agent.

The organization announced the news last week as part of the Prix Galien USA 2022 awards series.

The antibody cocktail Inmazeb (atoltivimab, maftivimab and odesivimab-ebgn) became the first FDA-approved treatment for Ebola (Zaire Ebolavirus) for pediatric and adult patients in 2020.

The Tarrytown, New York–based biotechnology company Regeneron developed Inmazeb with its proprietary VelocImmune mouse technology to facilitate the immediate generation of genetically altered mice from modified embryonic stem cells. In addition, the technique enabled the company to study the drug preclinically without breeding multiple generations of mice.

The Galien Foundation last night honored Cala Health’s Cala Trio essential tremor treatment wearable as 2022’s best medical device innovation.

The foundation describes its Prix Galien awards as the global equivalent of the Nobel Prize for the life science industry.

The Cala Trio offers a non-invasive method to send signals to the brain to treat essential tremor rather than deep-brain stimulation. It was one of two dozen devices that were nominees in this year’s competition. (Here is Medical Design & Outsourcing‘s roundup of the full 24.)

Abbott FreeStyle Libre named ‘best medical technology’ in last 50 years by Galien Foundation

The foundation named FreeStyle Libre as the best “Best Medical Technology” of the last 50 years. Other medtech receiving the designation included Edwards Lifesciences’ Sapien 3 Ultra TAVR and Roche’s Cobas HPV test.

This announcement came at the Prix Galien Golden Jubilee Awards ceremony last night in New York City. The foundation picked award winners across five categories from 250 products awarded the Prix Galien between 1970 and 2019.

The 24 best medical device innovations of 2022

The Galien Foundation recently announced its nominees of medical device innovations for its 2022 Prix Galien USA awards.

There are 24 medical technologies nominated for the annual award this year, up from 18 nominees in 2021.

The Galien Foundation’s annual Prix Galien awards highlight devices, biotechnology and pharmaceutical products designed to improve the human condition.

Nominees need to be FDA-approved for the market within the last five years and show major potential to affect healthcare. The winners will be announced in October at the Prix Galien USA Awards in New York City.

This year, the foundation nominated 24 medical device innovations, 22 biotechnology products and 33 pharmaceutical agents. The devices range from an intraocular lens to a bariatric stapler.
