I enjoy reading bookstore staff recommendations. It’s nice to see how people in the know like to spend their time.

But if you asked me to pick my favorite panels on the agenda for DeviceTalks Boston, taking place May 1–2, 2024 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, I couldn’t do it.

In fact, I won’t do it. Sorry, dear reader, I’ve put too much into this agenda to pick one favorite session. Plus, I owe neutrality to our speakers — amazing professionals willing to give up two days to help me create something. That’s a covenant that I cannot violate by selecting a favorite.

But I can put our editorial team on the spot to pick their favorites. And…

Canary Medical has first-in-human implant of heart sound monitor

Canary Medical announced today that it completed the first-in-human limited feasibility trial of its cardiac auscultation monitoring device.

Vancouver, British Columbia–based Canary is developing the device as a first-in-class implantable sensor. It provides daily adjunctive objective cardiac parameter measurements. The company believes it could enable patients and clinicians to better manage congestive heart failure symptoms.

Canary Medical conducted its feasibility trial in Paraguay. The company says it marks the first successful human implantation of a cardiac auscultation sensor device. It designed the first-in-human trial to ascertain the sensitivity, specificity and final design specifications for the device’s microphone system.

The company says it successfully completed the trial comprised of two subjects. It demonstrated visible mitral regurgitation sound signals from the sensor compared to normal acoustic heart signals.

“Today Canar…

Zimmer Biomet’s Liane Teplitsky on the ‘magic’ of data integration

Zimmer Biomet’s Persona IQ smart knee implant has sensors to measure device performance and patient recovery. [Image courtesy of Zimmer Biomet]

Zimmer Biomet’s robotics, technology and data president offers data integration advice, identifies opportunities beyond orthopedics and discusses tech she’s looking for.

Zimmer Biomet is collecting more data than it knows what to do with — and that’s a great opportunity, says Liane Teplitsky.

Teplitsky is the orthopedics developer’s president of global robotics and technology and data solutions. Her domain has expanded rapidly since she joined Zimmer Biomet from Abbott’s cardiac arrhythmia business in 2020.

Back then, Zimmer Biomet’s ZBEdge digital and robotic technology suite consisted of the mymobility patient care app and the Rosa surgical robotics system for brain and total knee procedures. Now, ZBEdge also includ…

In the medical device industry, stubborn problems can cost millions in development expenses and delay the introduction of new life-saving tools and technologies.

That’s why we build our DeviceTalks meetings as a forum where successful medical device engineers, manufacturers and market-builders can share their best practices, providing solutions that help clear hurdles, speed product development and potentially save lives.

DeviceTalks attendees leave our meeting with notebooks full of critical advice and pockets full of business cards. We’ll help fill both at DeviceTalks West, which takes place Oct. 18-19 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in California. You can view the full agenda on our…

Canary Medical integrates analytic module with Zimmer Biomet smart knee implant

The Canary Medical orthopedic analytics module integrates with the Persona IQ Smart Knee. [Image from Zimmer Biomet’s website]Canary Medical announced today that it introduced its first orthopedic analytic module: Canary Quantiles recovery curves.

Recovery curves utilize movement data measured by Canary Medical’s proprietary implantable Canturio TE tibial extension sensor technology. The sensor technology enables Zimmer Biomet’s Persona IQ smart knee implant.

Persona IQ with the Canturio TE tibial extension sensor technology collects activity measures and gait parameters for at least 10 years. By pooling parameters across the Persona IQ patient population, recovery curves provide population data for activity levels and knee kinematics. It also ranks each patient’s knee performance against peers. The technology does so based on age, group, gender and time since surgery, according to a news release.

Canary Medical said clinicians may n…

Join us at DeviceTalks West, the World’s Fair of Medtech

Intuitive Surgical CEO Gary Guthart will participate in a keynote interview at DeviceTalks West 2022. [Photo courtesy of Intuitive Surgical]

October’s DeviceTalks West conference is focused on the future.

The best-seller “Devil in the White City” may have darkened the perception of world’s fairs, but these international convocations have long presented visitors with an optimistic and hopeful view of the future, thanks in no small part to new technology. (The next one is scheduled for 2025 in Osaka, Japan, by the way.)

I like to think we’ll be following similar guidelines at the upcoming DeviceTalks West conference, which will be held on Oct. 19-20 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

This event will bring together executives from Abbott, Boston Scientific, Edwards Lifesciences, Intuitive, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Outset Medical, Penumbra, Shockwave, Zimmer Biomet and many …

Zimmer Biomet, Canary Medical win FDA de novo nod for smart knee implant

Zimmer Biomet (NYSE:ZBH) and Canary Medical announced today that the FDA granted de novo classification for Persona IQ.

The de novo grant and marketing authorization comes for the tibial extension for Persona IQ, which the companies tout as the first and only smart knee implant cleared by the FDA for total knee replacement surgery.

According to a news release, Persona IQ combines Zimmer Biomet’s Persona personalized knee implant with Canary Medical’s proprietary implantable Canturio te tibial extension sensor technology designed to measure and determine range of motion, step count, walking speed and other gait metrics.

Zimmer Biomet’s remote care management platform that includes MyMobility with Apple Watch and other components of the ZBEdge connected intelligence suite will work together with Persona IQ, which the companies will make available to healthcare providers in the coming months.

Once implanted in the knee, Persona IQ r…

Even as Zimmer Biomet prepares to launch its Persona-IQ smart knee implant later this year, the ortho device giant is looking at additional opportunities to package sensors inside ortho implants.

Startup Canary Medical (Vancouver, British Columbia), which created the Canary Health Implantable Reporting Processor (CHIRP) that is going inside the Persona-IQ, has cemented a long-term relationship with Zimmer Biomet to provide proprietary use of the sensor technology for all the areas where ZB is active, ZB CEO Bryan Hanson disclosed during the company’s Q1 earnings call.
