Asensus secures pediatric indication for its robotic surgery system

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina–based Asensus says Senhance is the first and only digital laparoscopic surgery solution for pediatric patients. During the company’s fourth-quarter earnings announcement early this month, it said it expected the pediatric indication this year.

The Senhance system’s Intelligent Surgical Unit combines 3 mm instrumentation, a 5 mm camera scope, haptic feedback, and advanced clinical intelligence, according to Asensus.

Asensus Surgical expects FDA clearance for surgical robot in pediatric use this year

The company provided an outlook for the year ahead that includes the expected clearance of a regulatory hurdle, though.

Shares of ASXC fell 2.6% to 67¢ apiece in early-morning trading today. MassDevice’s MedTech 100 Index — which includes stocks of the world’s largest medical device companies — ticked up 0.8%.

The Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based surgical robot maker posted losses of $17.9 million. That amounts to losses of 8¢ per share on sales of $2.5 million for the three months ended Dec. 31, 2022.

Asensus’ bottom line slipped deeper into the red by about $2 million. Sales came in 0.4% behind the same period one year ago.

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based Asensus designed luna as an integrated digital surgery solution. Its final component, a secure cloud platform, applies machine learning to deliver clinical insights.

Asensus Surgical wins CE mark approval for expanded machine learning

The approval expands machine vision for the previously cleared Intelligent Surgical Unit (ISU) of the Senhance system. This regulatory nod makes the expanded ISU capabilities available across Europe, Japan and the U.S. The FDA cleared the machine vision capabilities in September 2021.

According to a news release, the approval also makes Senhance one of the first surgical robot systems approved through EU MDR.

Asensus Surgical projects at least $2.2M in Q4 sales

[Image from Asensus Surgical]Asensus Surgical (NYSE:ASXC) this week announced preliminary fourth-quarter results that came up well short of Wall Street estimates.

The company expects to report revenues between $2.2 million and $2.8 million. Analysts expected the company to bring in approximately $3.7 million over the three months ended Dec. 31, 2022.

Asensus expects its full-year revenue to total between $6.8 million and $7.4 million.

During the fourth quarter, the company reported 23% growth in procedures with its Senhance surgical robot. It initiated five Senhance programs during the quarter, including multiple in Japan. The company’s 2,650 procedures performed globally in 2022 tops 2021 totals by 26%.

Shares of ASXC have been rising since the reporting of these preliminary figures. The day of the report, Jan. 9, shares closed trading at 45¢ apiece. Today, they’re up to approximately 60¢ each.

Asensus Surgical announces another surgical robot placement in Japan

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based Asensus entered the agreement with Kitakyushu General Hospital. It marks the second Senhance system leased at the hospital in the Kyushu area of Japan. Asensus placed the first one in Japan in January 2020. Kitakyushu is the first hospital to install multiple Senhance surgical robots and it completed more than 300 procedures with the system to date.

Asensus continues to expand its reach in Japan following last week’s Senhance placement in Kashiwa. Additionally, In September, Saiseikai Shiga Hospital in Ritto, Japan, agreed to lease a surgical robot.

Asensus Surgical says procedures up by more than a third in Q2

Asensus Surgical (NYSE American: ASXC) today announced mixed Q2 results that also included 34% procedures growth year-over-year.

The Research Triangle Park, North Carolina–based surgical robotics and digital surgery company lost $19.6 million, or 8¢ per share, off $994,000 in revenue for the quarter ended June 20, 2022 — versus a loss of $13.2 million, or 6¢ per share, off $1.1 million in revenue for the same quarter a year ago.

Wall Street analysts had expected EPS of –8¢ on $1.25 million in revenue.

During Q2, Asensus announced the installation of a Senhance system at the University Hospital Tübingen in Germany. The company also has two additional orders that have not yet been installed — including one heading toward one of the countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States, the international organization that includes Russia and many other former republics of the Soviet Union.
