LivaNova (Nasdaq:LIVN) announced today that it began a limited commercial release for its Essenz perfusion system in Europe.
The company initiated its launch in select centers throughout Europe after successful implementation in The Netherlands and Italy.
London-based LivaNova built the Essenz system with a next-generation heart-lung machine and a patient monitor. The company designed it to deliver a patient-tailored approach that supports data-drive decisions during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures.
Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, The Netherlands carried out the first clinical cases with Essenz. San Donato Hospital in Milan, Italy represented the other European center to kick off the launch. Eddy Overdevest, a perfusionist at Catharina Hospital, said Essenz creates “a new era” of personalized care.
“We are very satisfied with the way the machine is performing and excited to finally be able to use it to support patients during open-heart procedures,” said Mauro Cotza, chief perfusionist at San Donato Hospital. “We were pleased to be the first hospital in the world to place a patient on bypass with Essenz during a minimally invasive mitral valve replacement surgery.”

LivaNova worked with more than 300 perfusionists during the design and development process, the company said. It sought to create a system that provides flexibility and scalability to optimize intraoperative care coordination.
Essenz builds upon the LivaNova S5 HLM system, the company said. Its patient monitor and HLM cockpit connect but operate separately. Additionally, each pump on Essenz is controlled individually. The system features accurate sensing technology and an intuitive dashboard on the patient monitor.
It also includes an ergonomic design with advanced cable management and a mast-mounted design for hygiene purposes. The cockpit provides one central view to control the device, check all perfusion and monitor patient parameters.
Essenz also has backing from a responsive service team in more than 100 countries, LivaNova said.
