Sparrow BioAcoustics launches software that turns a smartphone into a stethoscope

Sparrow BioAcoustics announced that it launched its Stethophone software that enables using a smartphone as a stethoscope.

The software turns smartphones into medical-grade stethoscopes. It allows users to capture, analyze and share critical heart health data with medical personnel from any location.

Sparrow won FDA clearance for the downloadable application in June 2023. That clearance made it the first-ever FDA-cleared smartphone stethoscope software-as-a-medical-device (SaMD). It picked up another FDA clearance for use by consumers, empowering individuals to take an active role in their heart health.

Stethophone utilizes the built-in microphone of a smartphone to capture the nuanced sounds of the heart. It filters the sounds through bioacoustics engineering to provide clear, medical-grade diagnostic signals. Sparrow believes its technology could help with the detection and diagnosis of routine and difficult cardiac conditions sooner and with more ease…

Sparrow BioAcoustics wins FDA clearance for smartphone stethoscope

Sparrow BioAcoustics today announced it received FDA 510(k) clearance for its software that turns smartphones into medical stethoscopes.

The downloadable Stethophone application uses advanced acoustic processing to provide clinicians with smartphones that have highly sensitive cardiac and pulmonary listening capabilities. It requires nothing to plug in, charge or connect, and heart and lung sounds are captured by holding a smartphone to a patient’s chest without the need to attach any additional devices.

“Our goal is to enable large-scale, rapid detection of cardiac and pulmonary symptoms, wherever they occur,” CEO Mark Attila Opauszky said in a news release. “There is a world of diagnostic information contained in chest sounds, and the healthcare system needs a practical way to capture this data and put it to work for the benefit of patients. Stethophone eliminates the main obstacles to doing that.”
