Siemens Healthineers, SSM ink deal to improve health equity

SSM Health and Siemens Healthineers announced today that they entered into a 10-year strategic partnership focused on health equity.

The companies aim to expand access to high-quality care and aid in training the next generation of healthcare workers. Siemens Healthineers says the agreement marks its largest geographic strategic partnership to date.

SSM Health, a fully integrated healthcare delivery system, provides a value-driven care model to communities in the Midwest region of the U.S. Siemens Healthineers intends to supply SSM with access to its latest innovations and best practices in diagnostic imaging. The agreement also includes the company’s state-of-the-art technology and software, plus education and on-site support.

Siemens Healthineers reports temporary logistics challenges at Varian

News of some outbound logistics challenges holding back revenue at Varian helped send Siemens Healthineers (ETR: SHL) stock down today.

SHL shares were down more than 5% to €49.16 apiece on the Xetra exchange in Germany.

Excluding the declining rapid COVID-19 antigen test business at Siemens Healthineers, comparable revenue growth was at 10.1% during the third quarter ended June 30, 2023. Taking the COVID tests into account, revenue grew 3.6% to €5.2 billion on a comparable basis. Net income was up 24% year-over-year to €451 million.

Siemens Healthineers CEO Bernd Montag acknowledged to analysts today that Varian’s comparable revenue growth of 6.7% during Q3 was held back by outbound logistics challenges that the company considers temporary. Montag said Varian needs to work through an order backlog; he was optimistic that the orders that didn’t make the cutoff in Q3 would make it into Q4 results.

Siemens Healthineers lays off 67 workers in New Jersey

[Image courtesy of Google]Siemens Healthineers has let go of 67 workers at a diagnostics facility in Flanders, New Jersey, according to a notice filed with the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development.

The WARN notice from Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, which the state received on June 8, said the layoff goes into effect on September 7. It cited a variety of external economic headwinds.

Employees who are being let go can apply for any internal position for which they are qualified, according to the notice. The company is providing the workers with wages for the notice period, severance, pay for PTO accrued but not used, and COBRA health insurance benefits.

A Siemens Healthineers spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.

Siemens Healthineers plans new semiconductor factory for photon-counting CT scanner

Siemens Healthineers announced plans this week to build a factory in Germany for cultivating crystals used to make semiconductors for advanced computed tomography (CT) scanners.

The medtech giant said its existing production facility in Japan is at capacity, and that the new fabrication plant (or “fab”) is scheduled to come online in 2026.

Siemens Healthineers opens training center to fight labor shortage

Siemens Healthineers today opened its new Education & Development Center (EDC) in Erlangen, Germany.

The medtech giant said the three-year project cost around 60 million euros, an investment in the company’s strategy to address a predicted shortage of skilled workers. The center will offer medical device training for customers and in-house specialists.

Siemens Healthineers is cutting back on surgical robotics program

On the company’s first-quarter earnings call, first reported by Reuters, CFO Jochen Schmitz confirmed the strategy shift. He said the “use of Corindus robots for cardiology operations did not fulfill our expectations.” Schmitz reportedly added that the timeline for robots for neurological operations to reach the market constitutes “several years.”

In 2019, Siemens Healthineers bought out Corindus for $1.1 billion. Corindus develops the CorPath robot-assisted device for coronary and peripheral vascular procedures.

The business arm aims to provide innovative, image-guided robotic solutions. Its CorPath GRX system supports endovascular procedures.

Scopio and Siemens Healthineers today announced a global distribution deal for the Scopio X100 and Scopio X100HT.

Drop in COVID-19 diagnostic sales hampers Siemens Healthineers in Q1

Siemens Healthineers today announced first-quarter financial results that include a projection of single-digit growth in 2023.

Despite growth ahead, Siemens Healthineers reported adjusted earnings per share at €0.47 (51¢) for the three months ended Dec. 31, 2022. It reported revenues of nearly €5.1 billion ($5.6 billion) and profits totaling €426 million ($464.9 million).

The company reported a comparable revenue decline of 4.5% compared to the same three-month period one year prior. It attributed this in a news release to markedly lower revenue from rapid COVID-19 antigen test sales. Excluding the antigen tests, revenue growth registered at 0.7%. Diagnostic sales fell 23.7% year-over-year.

Varian wins U.S., European clearance for radiotherapy systems

Both radiotherapy systems feature Varian’s HyperSight imaging solution. HyperSight enables clinicians to capture high-quality images of patients during their daily radiation treatments. The images help in the daily localization of patient tumors and their uses include replanning and adaptation to patient and tumor changes.

HyperSight uses cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology. This delivers larger images with better contrast. Varian said in a news release that this method is 10 times faster than conventional linear accelerator-based imaging systems. Traditional CBCT imaging may take up to 60 seconds and require patients to hold their breath. Siemens Healthineers, GE HealthCare reportedly express interest in Medtronic units

According to reports, Siemens Healthineers and GE HealthCare registered interest in acquiring business units from Medtronic (NYSE:MDT).

Bloomberg first reported the interest from the two companies in two units Medtronic plans to spinoff. The outlet cited people familiar with the matter.

In October, Medtronic announced its intention to pursue a separation of the company’s Patient Monitoring and Respiratory Interventions businesses. Both comprise part of the company’s Medical Surgical portfolio. In spinning those businesses off, the company aims to create value for itself and shareholders, CEO Geoff Martha said.

According to Bloomberg, sources indicated that Medtronic remains open to a sale at the right price. The report also said it values the businesses at more than $7 billion. Others registering interest include private equity firms, Bloomberg said.

In 2019, Siemens Healthineers bought out Corindus for $1.1 billion. Corindus develops the CorPath robot-assisted device for coronary and peripheral vascular procedures.

According to a news release, brand unification represents “the final step” in the company integration process that began in 2019. The business aims to advance interventions with robotics, changing the delivery of care through innovations. These innovations enhance physician techniques and bring precision to interventional procedures, Siemens said.

Siemens Healthineers presents duo of new MRI scanners

The company unveiled its Magnetom Cima.X with 3T field strength and Magnetom Terra.X with 7T at its Siemens Healthineers Shape 23 Keynote.

“Due to their high field strengths and strong gradient performance, both scanners will be optimal for detecting the finest structures in the body more clearly,” said Aruther Kaindl, head of MRI at Siemens Healthineers. “By introducing AI-based algorithms on these high-end scanners for the first time, we reduce the scanning time in MRI by up to 50%4, while improving image quality.”
