Calumeo launches dry-heat N95 reprocessor

Calumeo today announced the U.S. launch of a point-of-care N95 mask reprocessing device.

The Morgan Hill-Calif.-based company said its Calumeo Clean countertop device uses dry heat to decontaminate N95 masks for reuse, without the use of toxic chemicals. The process takes just over an hour. The device can process six masks at a time and each mask can be processed this way up to five times, the company added.

Cardinal Health posts Street-beating Q2, raises EPS guidance

Cardinal Health (NYSE:CAH) shares dipped slightly on second-quarter results that topped the consensus forecast.

The Dublin, Ohio-based company posted profits of $629 million, or $2.13 per share, on sales of $41.5 billion for the three months ended Dec. 31, 2020, for a more-than doubled bottom-line on sales growth of 4.5%.

Adjusted to exclude one-time items, earnings per share were $1.74, 30¢ ahead of Wall Street, where analysts were looking for sales of $41.4 billion.

Cardinal Health’s medical segment saw a 7% year-over-year revenue increase to $4.3 billion, resulting in a $236 million profit — a 21% gain from Q2 2020. The increases were attributed to the impact of personal protective equipment (PPE) sales and higher volumes for the companies lab business, both related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ford designs clear mask to aid hearing-impaired

Ford Motor Company announced that it is ramping up new initiatives to help protect people from COVID-19, including mask development.

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford designed a patent-pending, clear respirator in the hopes of benefitting those with hearing impairments. It expects the respirator to certify to N95 standards of virus protection.

The transparent, low-cost, reusable respirators allow people to communicate better by seeing the full range of human expression, while those with hearing impairments would be better able to read lips that are blocked the standard personal protective equipment (PPE) seen today.

Testing for the transparent respirators to prove effectiveness is underway and continuing through the winter, with Ford expecting availability sometime in the spring.

Biden’s COVID-19 response will make manufacturers busy

[Image courtesy of Biden for President]Manufacturers of vaccine supplies and personal protective equipment can expect more work as the new Biden administration rolls out its plans to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

In one of his first official acts as president, Joe Biden announced a plan to “fully use” the Defense Production Act to ramp up production of testing supplies, masks, face shields and other PPE, with an eye toward boosting American manufacturing to reduce reliance on other countries. The president also announced his intention to invest $25 billion in a vaccine manufacturing and distribution plan that will provide vaccines to all Americans, free of charge.

FDA releases first pandemic supply shortage list

Months into the coronavirus pandemic, the FDA has released its first official list of shortages of items needed by healthcare workers.

The list ranges from personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gowns and gloves to testing supplies and ventilation-related products for the sickest patients. The list also includes  Becton Dickinson (NYSE:BDX) BodyGuard infusion pump and syringe pump systems, which were discontinued in April following a Class 1 recall.
