“The outstanding quality of the submissions is a testament to the promising future of the life sciences industries,” said former Johnson & Johnson CEO and Chair Alex Gorsky — one of the awards jurors — in a news release announcing the nominees.

Medtech Big 100: These companies just missed the list

Each year, it takes more and more revenue to make our Medtech Big 100 ranking of the world’s largest medical device companies.

This year’s No. 100 — Artivion (formerly CryoLife) — secured the final spot in our ranking with revenue of $313.8 million.

Last year, $236.2 million was enough to get Cardiovascular Systems (now part of Abbott) onto the Medtech Big 100 company ranking at No. 100.

Companies on the bubble in recent years have made their way onto the Medtech Big 100. For example, Inspire Medical Systems missed the list by a single spot last year, but made No. 94 in our new ranking.

With that in mind, here are the companies that would have ranked Nos. 101 to 105 on this year’s list. Watch out for them in future versions of the Medtech Big 100.

Outset Medical CEO Leslie Trigg and the beginner’s mindset

The home dialysis developer’s CEO discusses leadership, leaping before you look and making medtech for the home and hospital.

Eight years after becoming the CEO of Outset Medical (Nasdaq:OM) and two years after going public, Leslie Trigg says the medtech developer is finally at the starting gate for home dialysis.

It hasn’t been easy. The COVID-19 pandemic made it unsafe to train nurses in person, even as hospitals used the Tablo hemodialysis console in hallways and waiting rooms to clean patients’ blood. The pandemic also disrupted Outset’s supply chain. For example, it increased transportation costs for its single-use cartridges made by a contract manufacturer in Southeast Asia.

Last year, Outset had to put new shipments on hold while working through issues with the FDA.

And when she first go…

October’s DeviceTalks West conference is focused on the future.

The best-seller “Devil in the White City” may have darkened the perception of world’s fairs, but these international convocations have long presented visitors with an optimistic and hopeful view of the future, thanks in no small part to new technology. (The next one is scheduled for 2025 in Osaka, Japan, by the way.)

I like to think we’ll be following similar guidelines at the upcoming DeviceTalks West conference, which will be held on Oct. 19-20 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

This event will bring together executives from Abbott, Boston Scientific, Edwards Lifesciences, Intuitive, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Outset Medical, Penumbra, Shockwave, Zimmer Biomet and many …
