Deadline for MedTech Color pitch competition nears

The deadline for the MedTech Color annual pitch competition is near as the organization seeks to advance the representation of persons of color in medtech.

MedTech Color, a non-profit organization, aims to find cutting-edge, early-stage startups led by African-American and Hispanic founders. Its pitch competition offers minority entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase products or services.

Application submissions remain open through Friday, Jan. 13. MedTech Color plans to announce the top 10 finalists on Jan. 24, 2023. The competition seeks innovations and medical and/or wearable devices, diagnostics, digital health, health security and more. Companies are in their seed stage, raising equity rounds in the amount of $250,000-$3 million.

Medtech Color recently announced that it has selected the creator of an app for perinatal mental health as its 2022 Pitch Competition winner.

Candlelit (New York City) walks away with $50,000 in non-dilutive funding as well as special prizes from Texas Medical Center Innovation, Johnson & Johnson and ResMed.

Medtech Color and its panel of judges selected Candlelit last week. The company’s app focuses on women who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

New FDA-backed initiative seeks to boost diversity in medtech

MedTech Color launched of a Collaborative Community on Diversity and Inclusion in Medical Device Product Development and Clinical Research.

The MedTech Color Collaborative Community aims to bring together public and private stakeholders and develop targeted strategies to up the awareness, understanding and participation of racial and ethnic minorities within the medtech industry, according to a news release.

Medtech entrepreneurs of color hoping to secure a portion of more than $100,000 in cash and in-kind services have until Feb. 5 to apply to MedTech Color’s first pitch contest.

The organization launched the contest last month, inviting Black and Latinx founders in the healthcare space to pitch their ideas to investors and corporate sponsors. The entire contest will be run virtually.

Angelique Johnson, co-founder of MedTech Color and CEO of MEMstim, said the contest is looking broadly at entrepreneurs in the healthcare space. Entrepreneurs can be focused on traditional medical devices, software, healthcare apps and other technologies.

“Our top prize is $25,000 and that’s non-dilutive,” Johnson said in an interview in the current episode of the DeviceTalks Weekly Podcast. “It’s income for the company. No strings attached.”
