What are the largest medical device companies?

Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson MedTech and Siemens Healthineers top the Big 100 list of largest medical device companies by revenue.

The 2022 edition of MassDevice and Medical Design & Outsourcing‘s Big 100 report also holds surprises.  Big conglomerates are spinning out medtech businesses as stand-alone companies, and that means changes to the list of 100 largest medical device companies.

Colfax, for example, engaged in business moves that turned DJO’s parent into Enovis, a large, stand-alone orthopedic device company that is No. 56 in 2022’s Big 100. ZimVie, formerly Zimmer Biomet’s spine and dental business, is 69th. And after decades under larger corporate umbrellas, Cordis debuts at No. 76 on the list.

We collected thousands of data points to size up the industry’s publicly traded companies and privately held firms. The Big 100 includes annual revenue, R&D spending, employee counts, key leaders, headquarters locatio…

Join us at DeviceTalks West, the World’s Fair of Medtech

Intuitive Surgical CEO Gary Guthart will participate in a keynote interview at DeviceTalks West 2022. [Photo courtesy of Intuitive Surgical]

October’s DeviceTalks West conference is focused on the future.

The best-seller “Devil in the White City” may have darkened the perception of world’s fairs, but these international convocations have long presented visitors with an optimistic and hopeful view of the future, thanks in no small part to new technology. (The next one is scheduled for 2025 in Osaka, Japan, by the way.)

I like to think we’ll be following similar guidelines at the upcoming DeviceTalks West conference, which will be held on Oct. 19-20 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

This event will bring together executives from Abbott, Boston Scientific, Edwards Lifesciences, Intuitive, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Outset Medical, Penumbra, Shockwave, Zimmer Biomet and many …

J&J’s Acclarent wins FDA clearance for navigated shaver blade for ENT procedures

Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Acclarent business announced FDA 510(k) clearance for its TruDi shaver blade and its advanced navigation features.

In a news release posted yesterday, Acclarent described TruDI as a single-use electromagnetically navigated blade. It’s used with the company’s Bien-Air S120 shaver for the incision and removal of soft and hard tissue or bone in ENT, maxillofacial surgery, head and neck, and ENT skull base surgery.

The TruDi shaver blade is navigable. It has distal tip sensor integration, enabling the display of the blade’s position and opening on the TruDi navigation system.

“When performing endoscopic sinus procedures, every millimeter counts, so a navigable shaver blade connected to a sophisticated mapping system that provides real-time visualization of the blade location helps me know where I am, where my trainees are, and where we are going during surgery,” said Dr. C.S. Ebert Jr. professor at the Depart…

To catch a clot, you must first understand a clot, and Michael Gilvarry has spent years doing just that.

Gilvarry is the GM of Cerenovus in Galway, Ireland. He founded the Johnson & Johnson Medtech unit’s stroke science research arm and leads the acute ischemic stroke R&D portfolio.

That research led to the development and design of the Embotrap stent retriever device for thrombectomies, which helps stroke patients by removing the clots blocking the flow of blood to their brains.

“How the device design is informed by stroke science is something that we feel is really unique about the device,” he said in an interview. “All of that work we’ve done has le…
