Four steps medtech startups can’t put off

Developing and commercializing a new medical device is a success worth toasting for medtech startups — but that success also makes it more likely that litigation is in their future.

There are steps medtech startups can take to protect themselves down the road, said Greenberg Traurig shareholder Ginger Pigott, a litigator who defends major medical device manufacturers in court. She also advises medtech startups on early decisions and strategies that could have major ramifications down the road.

Pigott and two other women — Greenberg Traurig lawyer Miki Kolton and Fogarty Innovation Chief Innovation Officer Denise Zarins — will offer their expertise at our DeviceTalks West show in an Oct. 18 panel, “Going the Distance: Building Startups to Last.”

Summer health technology program brings diverse group of interns to Silicon Valley

Diversity by Doing HealthTech (DxD) is holding a Summer Innovation and Exploration Series for college student interns from underrepresented groups.

The series is on its second day today at Fogarty Innovation and Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign — the two organizations that jointly formed and support DxD. The event debuted last year in an online format with 20 interns. But this year’s series is the first in-person event — bringing together 44 students from more than 30 colleges. The students are interning at medtech companies across the country.

Interns during the June 23–24 program will participate in lecture-style presentations, small group activities and hands-on workshops. They’ll explore career trajectories, various aspects of running a company, and the biodesign innovation process. There will also be a “speed mentoring” event i…
