How these engineers make DeviceTalks Boston go!

We love engineers of all types — here are a just a few you’ll meet at DeviceTalks Boston.

We love engineers here at DeviceTalks.

It’s obvious why. Engineers are the straw that stirs medtech’s drink (apologies to Reggie Jackson). Nothing happens — financing, manufacturing, approval, help for patients — without a well-conceived product.

And engineers often transcend their typical design roles. They grow into business leaders, technology evangelists, startup CEOs, and yes, some stay to lead ground-breaking research and development groups.

So I’m thrilled to be bringing engineers of all types into the agenda of DeviceTalks Boston. We’ll have engineers from Abbott, ZimVie, Philips, Boston Scientific, Stryker and many other companies on hand to talk about being an engineer.

But we’ll also hear from engineers who have followed their careers into other parts of the medical device industry.

In this column, we’ll walk you through some of their …

Device developers get creative to connect with physicians

Medical device developers have gotten creative in connecting with surgeons and interventionalists during the pandemic.

Leaders from Abbott, Boston Scientific and Edwards Lifesciences shared some of their experiences, challenges and opportunities with attendees of DeviceTalks West in October.

The chief challenge is the number of physicians, nurses and other medical professionals who have left the field during the pandemic.

“The elephant in the room is that everybody is worried about how we’re going to get things to patients,” said Farzad Azimpour, SVP of Advanced Technology at Edwards Lifesciences. “How do we equip the limited capacity that we have right now — from nursing, physicians, everyone — to enable what we have to actually reach patients in a timely and appropriate manner…

Over 25 years at Johnson & Johnson, Martin has looked to improve standards of care for AFib, stroke and minimally invasive surgery. At DeviceTalks West in Santa Clara last week, she spoke in a keynote address about how she’s done it.

How medical device companies can better protect themselves from lawsuits

Getting hit with lawsuits isn’t an if, but a when for medical device developers and manufacturers. A veteran Greenberg Traurig lawyer shares advice for staying secure.

As with pharmaceutical companies and health providers, medtech is emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic with a great deal of goodwill, says Ginger Pigott, a Greenberg Traurig shareholder. Pigott has seen the industry’s improved image helping device companies with juries, mock juries and the litigation process in general.

But don’t bet on the trend lasting.

“I’ve been practicing for 30 years, and it goes in that cycle all the time,” Pigott said in a recent interview with Medical Design & Outsourcing. (Pigott will moderate a panel about building startups to last at DeviceTalks West, Oct. 19-20, 2022 in Santa Clara, California.)

In fact, Pigott suspects the present economic unc…

Join us at DeviceTalks West, the World’s Fair of Medtech

October’s DeviceTalks West conference is focused on the future.

The best-seller “Devil in the White City” may have darkened the perception of world’s fairs, but these international convocations have long presented visitors with an optimistic and hopeful view of the future, thanks in no small part to new technology. (The next one is scheduled for 2025 in Osaka, Japan, by the way.)

I like to think we’ll be following similar guidelines at the upcoming DeviceTalks West conference, which will be held on Oct. 19-20 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

This event will bring together executives from Abbott, Boston Scientific, Edwards Lifesciences, Intuitive, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Outset Medical, Penumbra, Shockwave, Zimmer Biomet and many …
