Biomerics deal makes it Costa Rica’s largest contract manufacturer; expect more deals to come

Medical device contract manufacturer Biomerics announced a deal to acquire the medical business of Precision Concepts.

Salt Lake City-based Biomerics said yesterday it plans to buy the medical business and assets of Mooresville, North Carolina-based Precision Concepts International and Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based Precision Concepts Group.

Biomerics did not disclose the terms of the deal, which is expected to close next month. Until then, the companies will operate independently.

The deal will push Biomerics’ total manufacturing footprint above 1.2 million ft2 across 13 locations. Biomerics said that will make it one of the world’s 10 largest interventional contract design and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs).

Precision Concepts medical operations are in Harrisonburg, Virginia; Mebane, North Carolina; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Haina, Dominican Republic; and Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Biomerics this week announced it opened a 2,000 sq. ft research and development facility in Galway, Ireland.

The new Balloons and Balloons Catheters Center of Excellence will be the first facility in Europe and the second facility outside of the U.S. It will act as an extension to its Athens, Texas operations and will be dedicated to the development and manufacturing of balloons and balloon catheters.

Contract manufacturers fuel medtech expansion in Costa Rica

Medical device manufacturing is flourishing in the Central American country, spurred by a host of incentives.

Medtech OEMs have made the Central American company a manufacturing hub since the 1990s. Major companies operating there include Abbott, Bayer, Boston Scientific, Cardinal Health, Edwards Lifesciences, Hologic, Medtronic, Philips, Smith+Nephew and Wright Medical. Eight of these are among the top 20 exporters in Costa Rica, representing nearly $2.7 million in medical device exports in 2019 — 73% of the total.

Medtech OEMs in Costa Rica want their suppliers nearby, making the Central American country a magnet for contract manufacturers. Biomerics expands Costa Rica manufacturing operations

Biomerics recently announced that it is doubling its manufacturing footprint in Costa Rica.

The Salt Lake City, Utah-based company broke ground on a new greenfield plant adjacent to its current operations in the La Zeta Free Trade Zone in Cartago, Costa Rica. The new facility totals 110,000 sq. ft and will include engineering labs, quality inspection labs, controlled environment manufacturing, office space, class 7 clean rooms, packaging and warehouse facilities.
