MedTech 100 roundup: Industry shatters all-time best with remarkable rise

The medtech industry’s steady growth provided optimism in recent weeks, but an unforeseen leap sees it hitting new heights now.

MassDevice‘s MedTech 100 Index — which includes stocks of the world’s largest medical device companies — finished last week (July 16) at 145.88 points, a remarkable 27.1% rise week-over-week, registering by far the greatest increase the index has seen since its inception.

Remarkably, the industry’s July 9 tally of 114.79 points a week prior had, at that point, been known to be the index’s all-time best to date. The new high set on Friday of last week totals an increase of 31.09 points.

Medtech’s performance continues to reflect an overall rebound from the struggles brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, too, especially after this latest unpredictable rise. The industry has registered a 58% increase from the pre-pandemic high of 92.32 (set on Feb. 19, 2020), plus it has fully eclipsed 100% growth from the mid-pand…

MedTech 100 roundup: Significant uptick for industry

The up-and-down nature of the medtech industry continues to carry through 2021, with a recent dip now followed by a rapid ascent.

MassDevice‘s MedTech 100 Index — which includes stocks of the world’s largest medical device companies — finished the week (June 11) at 109.63 points, producing a 2.5% rise from the 106.96-point mark set one week prior (June 4).

It provides a welcome sight after the industry’s progress came to a halt with a -1.4% dip the week before last. The index remains in a position to produce another upswing after demonstrating signs of picking up again when April brought the industry’s all-time best performance.

Even with setbacks that slowed the industry recently, medtech’s performance continues to reflect an overall rebound from the struggles brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, too. The industry has registered a 18.8% rise from the pre-pandemic high of 92.32 (set on Feb. 19, 2020), plus a 76.5% increase from the mid-pandemic low…

BD is upping its game on cybersecurity

BD (NYSE: BDX) is touting that it is the first medical technology company authorized as a Common Vulnerability and Exposures (CVE) Numbering Authority by the CVE Program.

BD officials say the authorization further boosts the company’s healthcare cybersecurity leadership. Cybersecurity has become a major issue for the medical device industry, with FDA even appointing its first medtech cybersecurity chief this year.

“The CVE Program is the de facto international standard for vulnerability identification and naming,” CVE board member Chris Levendis said in a June 2 news release from BD. “Being authorized as a CVE Numbering Authority demonstrates mature vulnerability management practices and a strong commitment to cybersecurity. By making accurate and timely vulnerability information available, CNAs like BD help their customers streamline early-stage vulnerability management.”

BD has developed a mature Coordinated Vulnerability …
