5 innovations to make duodenoscopes more single-use — and save lives

[Images from Boston Scientific, Ambu and Olmypus]Duodenoscopes are important medical devices that are used for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures. However, the devices have had serious problems in the past.

Luckily, several medical device companies have stepped in to solve the problems. (Here are five of the innovations.)

Duodenoscopes are flexible, lighted tubes threaded through the mouth, throat and stomach into the top of the small intestine. They’re an important tool for spotting problems such as lesions and tumors in the pancreatic duct and bile duct, but the devices are also complex, with many small working parts.

“Duodenoscopes – regardless of whether they are reusable or single-use – are one of the most technically complex flexible endoscopes to design and manufacture, as they travel deep into the body with a camera mounted on the side instead of the front,” David Pierce, EVP and president of MedSurg and president of e…

Ambu, Boston Sci execs see domination for single-use scopes

Hospital closures connected to COVID-19 have cut into the sales of many medical device companies, but executives at rival makers of single-use scopes say pandemic has only heightened existing concerns about contamination, exposure and cost.

In interviews in this week’s DeviceTalks Weekly Podcast, executives from Ambu A/S  and Boston Scientific (NYSE:BSX)  said improved technology make single-use scopes as effective as reusable scopes without carrying the price tag or risk of infection traditional scopes require.

Steve Block, president of Ambu US, projected that over the next decade disposable scopes will account for a majority of devices sold, saying they’ll perform better than traditional devices, cost less, and eliminate the risk of infection. “There is just no reason to use a reusable product,” he said. He said Ambu has sold single-use scopes into 96% of the Top 500 hospitals in the US performing bronchoscopies.

Block appeared on the podcast alongside…

Ambu announced that it was awarded a single-use endoscopy contract in the category of surgical disposable scopes with Premier Inc.

Columbia, Md.-based Ambu said in a news release that it was also the only supplier of single-use endoscopes designated to participate in Premier’s Surpass and Ascend purchasing programs.

The three-year agreement creates a single-use endoscopy category specifically for the Premier membership, which, having been signed this week, becomes effective Nov. 1, 2020. Premier’s range of representation across 4,100 hospitals and health systems in the U.S., along with 200,000 other providers, is set to accelerate Ambu’s share of the single-use endoscope market, the company said.

Premier’s Surpass program offers $8.4 billion in annual supply chain purchasing with more than 30,000 ac…

Ambu announced today that FDA has cleared its aScope Duodeno — a sterile, single-use duodenoscope meant to avoid the deadly superbug outbreaks that cropped up around reusable versions of the scopes.

Other companies — including Boston Scientific (NYSE:BSX),  Hoya’s (TYO:7741) Pentax subsidiary, and Olympus (TYO:7733) — have been releasing either fully disposable duodenoscopes or duodenoscopes with disporable endcaps or disposable elevators.

Duodenoscopes provide a less invasive way than traditional surgery to drain fluids from pancreatic and biliary ducts blocked by cancerous tumors, gallstones or other gastrointestinal conditions — with an estimated 600,000 procedures conducted annually in the United States.

FDA has been pushing duodenoscope makers to change designs, and CMS has been working to speed up Medicare beneficiar…
