Ambu today said it has hired board member Britt Meelby Jensen to replace CEO Juan Jose Gonzalez, effective tomorrow.

Ambu makes single-use scopes available for swallowing evaluation procedures

Ambu says its single-use aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo Slim and aView 2 Advance HD monitor provide a portable way to perform bedside swallowing evaluations (FEES) in healthcare settings. [Image courtesy of Ambu]Ambu today announced new capabilities for its single-use aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo Slim and aView 2 Advance HD monitor.

The new capabilities bring Ambu single-use endoscopy to bear on fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) procedures, which Ambu officials take place more than 1 million times a year across key markets in North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

“FEES procedures represent a large and growing area for patient care, one which has become even more important since Covid-19, and one where single-use endoscopy can play an important role,” said Bassel Rifai, Ambu’s chief marketing officer.

The FEES procedure requires a flexible rhinolaryngoscope to assess swallowing physiology and function for people with trouble swallowing…

The aBox 2 includes HD capabilities to improve image quality at the heart of Ambu’s endoscopy ecosystem.

According to a news release, the launch of the aScope Gastro platform allows Ambu to enter into the gastroscopy segment with a single-use scope, offering advanced technology, portability and cost-effectiveness compared to the reusable endoscopes that dominate the space.

The company said aScope Gastro will support healthcare systems in reducing waiting lists and overcoming staff shortages, too, amid issues that have persisted since the COVID-19 pandemic began. It also provides a solution to cross-con…

How medtech fared in the first waves of the pandemic

[Photo by Martin Sanchez on Unsplash]Medtech industry revenue, research spending and employment declined in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Medical Design & Outsourcing analysis of financial data.

Total sales, R&D spending and employment for the world’s largest medical device companies declined in 2020 and early 2021, according to a Medical Design & Outsourcing analysis tallying the ongoing pandemic’s initial toll on the industry.

To compare performance before and during the pandemic, MDO used the financial data that we’ve historically gathered to rank our Big 100 companies in the last three years. The majority of these companies reported full-year results for 2020; others operate on a fiscal year and reported annual results in the first half of 2021.

Some companies are not in this year’s Big 100 but were included in the analysis because they were ranked in pre-pandemic years. The handful of companies that joined this yea…

He found that 3.6 percent of patients treated with a single-use, flexible bronchoscope were readmitted within 30 days, compared to 7.7 percent of patients whose procedures used reusable scopes.

“The data analysis demonstrates significant clinical benefits of single-use bronchoscopes in reducing readmission rates and patient risk,” Garrett said in an Ambu news release. “To reduce these risks, the use of sterile single-use bronchoscopes should be considered to eliminate reprocessing failures, improve overall operational efficiency and reduce potential acquisition of healt…
