MedtronicMedtronic (NYSE:MDT) announced today that it appointed Lidia Fonseca to its board of directors as an independent director.

Fonseca, who serves as VP and chief digital and technology officer at Pfizer, will become a director effective today. She will serve on the board’s Compensation Committee and Science and Technology Committee.

Her extensive knowledge and expertise will provide the Board with an important dimension and a tremendously valuable perspective as we drive toward our bold ambition to become the global leader in healthcare technology.”

With more than 30 years of experience in healthcare innovation, Fonseca currently holds responsibility for developing and implementing an enterprise-wide digital strategy and leading all digital, data and technology solutions at Pfizer. She’s also responsible for Pfizer Learning and Development and Business Process Excellence.

Medtronic said Fonseca spearheads a range of innovative programs and initiatives, including ones for digitizing drug discovery and development, improving health outcomes and patient experiences through digital health, medicines and diagnostics, advancing operational processes through automation and robotics and delivering insights with analytics and artificial intelligence.

Fonseca’s most recent work includes leading Pfizer’s digital team as part of the effort to develop the company’s COVID-19 vaccine. She also led efforts to create Pfizer’s advanced analytics platform for combining data and tools from the company and external partners to model scientific and clinical decisions, patterns and insights.

Before Pfizer, Fonseca served as SVP and chief information officer (CIO) at Quest Diagnostics from 2014 to 2018. She was responsible for technology, informatics and digital solutions at Quest. Before that, she was SVP and CIO at Labcorp from 2008 to 2013.
