MedTech Innovator, a global medtech accelerator, announced that Phiex Technologies won its 2022 Grand Prize.
The accelerator named Phiex the winner at AdvaMed’s The MedTech Conference in Boston this week. Phiex won a $350,000 prize based on an audience vote. CEO CL Tian accepted the award.
Finalists 52 North Health, Limax Biosciences, LiveMetric and Moon Surgical each received $25,000.
Abigail Hunter-Syed of Olympus, Ranjini Srikantiah of BD, Tonja Curtis Danowski of Johnson & Johnson and Virginia Giddings of Edwards Lifesciences served as on-stage judges.
Boston-based Phiex develops self-sterilizing materials. The company seeks to create a cost-effective and environmentally safe option for manufacturers. The technology uses common packaging materials including plastic film or nonwoven material to sterilize devices.
The Phiex technology’s applications include medtech, food and defense. It features portability without the need for power and is extruded to allow customers to keep existing packaging and material designs. Phiex also offers control activation for use when needed with exposure to ambient light or moisture. It operates under flexible conditions. No reliance on heat, pressure or humidity pre-conditioning allows for greater utility and more application, Phiex’s website says.
About MedTech Innovator’s program
MedTech Innovator in June selected 50 startups to participate in the 10th iteration of its accelerator program. It awarded $500,000 total in cash and in-kind prizes in the final competition.
The MedTech Innovator accelerator program had a 5% acceptance rate, with the 50 chosen startups selected from a pool of more than 1,000 applications representing 49 countries and 43 U.S. states. A subset of 28 early-stage companies will also participate in MedTech Innovator’s corporate mentorship program.
At The MedTech Conference, all 50 companies presented in showcase panels. Five startups from the accelerator cohort competed for the “Execution Award” and another five advanced to compete in the “Grand Final” competition. Further cash and in-kind awards were presented, including incubator space from Johnson & Johnson Innovation — JLABS.
