Medical Design & Outsourcing received awards for design and content at the American Society of Business Publication Editors’ 2022 Azbee Awards of Excellence yesterday.

The annual awards program honors outstanding work by U.S.-based business-to-business, trade, association and professional publications, including magazines, websites, email newsletters, social media and blogs. The organization calls its awards program “one of the most competitive” in publishing.

Art Director Matt Claney won a regional silver award for magazine design and was a national finalist. Judges considered the March 2021 and May 2021 editions of MDO.

MDO showcases the ability to cover everything from hot topics such as post-COVID company practices to interesting feature stories detailing smart knee implants and the future of orthopedics,” Claney explained to judges in his submission. “For MDO as a whole, it is important that the design of the magazine not only allows the reader to quickly find and understand the information, but also make it approachable and interesting to our audiences. Medical Design & Outsourcing is designed with clean lines and white space, trends familiar to the medtech industry, while also incorporating eye-catching color and imagery. Magazine columns and editorial design are clearly separated from feature story coverage. Covers draw in the reader while also presenting some of the most important content in the issue in a clearly defined way.”

Senior Editor Danielle Kirsh won a regional bronze award for diversity, equity and inclusion content in MDO‘s yearly Women in Medtech edition. Kirsh analyzed the leadership rosters of the industry’s 100 largest companies and found that women held only 21% of those positions.

When she started the annual project in 2019, Kirsh expected to find women in around 30% of the most senior positions, but said it was “mind-blowing” that the rate was just 18%. Her findings even surprised the subjects of her analysis, with one company pledging to do better in future years — and following through.

“It’s important to tell stories from women voices [and] it’s important to hold companies accountable for diversity,” Kirsh said today.

Kirsh is already working on the 2022 Women in Medtech edition slated for publication in October. You can connect with her LinkedIn to learn more or follow her daily news coverage.

“What I like most about Women in Medtech in general is a lot of the startup founders are really grateful for anyone talking to them,” Kirsh said. “It feels impactful to work on that. I’ve had people tell me, ‘You’re part of our founding story.’ ”

Other titles published by MDO owner WTWH Media that won 2022 Azbee Awards include Design World, R&D World, Solar Power World, Windpower Engineering & Development, Club + Resort Business, Club + Resort Chef, and CStore Decisions.
