When a surgical team steps into an operating room, each member of that team has a defined purpose and role to play in the procedure at hand. There is, however, the common thread that each are dedicated completely to the care of that patient and ensuring that the best possible outcome is achieved. Of the countless variables to be considered in the care of a patient for any surgical procedure, the quality and performance of the instruments they work with should never be one of them. Both quality and performance must be unquestionable.

What is possible today because of advancements in medical devices, minimally invasive instruments, and robotic surgery is nothing short of amazing. At Hobson & Motzer we have proudly been a part of the medical device manufacturing landscape for nearly half of our 108-year history, using advanced technology to produce precision metal components and assemblies that help make many of today’s surgical advancements possible. It is important work that requires cutting-edge technology, and innovative manufacturers like Hobson & Motzer. We revel in the fact that our work plays an important role in improving the lives of others; it inspires our team to perform to the highest possible level each day.

Breakthroughs in the med device space require innovation, vision, and the ability to develop a design concept without the constraints of how, or even if, it can be made. Technology follows innovation and sometimes innovation follows technology—it is a mutual relationship. Manufacturing the components for such devices and instruments requires a diverse skillset and vast understanding of the machines and the metals from which they are made. We have brought these two worlds together with First Step, our project-based rapid precision prototype program. Through First Step, next-gen projects begin from the earliest stage with a manufacturing partner who brings a deep level of expertise and meaningful DFM; nurturing the design process, instead of performing DFM at the end of it. Our CNC equipment and advanced metrology and inspection systems support the overall success of our medical device parts and components manufacturing, but that only gets you halfway there.

CNC Technology & Talent Inspires Innovation

For high-precision parts with complex geometries, CNC machining is often the only production method capable of meeting specifications. This is especially true for many of the components used in expanding robotic surgery platforms. Today’s CNC technology can produce critical features with higher precision and tighter tolerances, which is particularly helpful at the prototype stage. It is vitally important to understand a manufacturer’s CNC strengths from an equipment—and also a human capital—standpoint.

Hobson & Motzer’s team of applications engineers brings a highly skilled, resourceful, and creative approach to each part we develop. Our First Step team brings experience from a wide range of industries, including medical, aerospace, and automotive. Continuous improvement keeps us current on the latest advancements in CNC technologies. For Hobson & Motzer, it is more than just producing a good quality part. Combining a heightened technical focus with deep expertise in transforming metal, which we have done for more than 100 years, sets Hobson & Motzer apart. It is a differentiator our customers have come to depend on that favorably impacts the result, their project, and their ability to keep delivering the next generation of medical device innovations.

The ability to excel and innovate in our field also requires the best technology. Hobson & Motzer invests in the future by buying the most advanced equipment and technologies available—and we do so annually and often. Advanced technology drives advanced designs that propel advanced achievements. This is our lane. We remain committed to being a leader in precision metal stamping and coined wire, multi-axis CNC machining, and component assembly.

Legacy and History of Getting the Job Done the First Time

Our forward-thinking philosophy has enabled us to consistently deliver on projects—often pushing the limits of man, machine, and material. Many clients have brought their critical projects to us after being told by other companies that the job could not be done, the tolerances could not be held, or the process could not be controlled. We are also frequently brought in when other manufacturers’ attempts have failed.

Hobson & Motzer has long held a strong position in the medical device market providing precision metal components for endo-mechanical devices. Over the last 45 years, we have developed a unique expertise in components for surgical stapling devices and other end effectors. Interestingly, the evolution of manufacturing technology at Hobson & Motzer runs parallel to that of modern surgical stapling instruments. As the industry has made the shift toward robotic platforms, our First Step program has brought an unrivaled level of precision to the prototyping process that has made us a natural partner in robotics.

Customers gain 100+ years of manufacturing experience on their team with:

  • CNC-machined precision tolerance prototypes
  • Deep collaborative approach & execution
  • High-level metrology & data collection
  • Learning curve continuity from development to launch
  • Fast turnaround
  • 80+ high-precision, high-speed CNC machines
  • 3-, 4-, and full 5-axis capability

Vertical Integration = Accountability & Control

Structurally, Hobson & Motzer also has a level of vertical integration that we feel sets us apart. It allows

check. Our approach to vertical integration is unique. We also maintain control over the manufacturing process with post-production operations that include finishing, deburring, laser welding and marking, surface printing for identification, specific coatings, and an assortment of in-house developed processes particular to the product itself. Hobson & Motzer excels with products that require more than a single operation or products that require multiple manufacturing processes, ensuring accountability and continuity in our protocols and the highest quality, precision, and repeatability in customers’ parts and components.

Hobson & Motzer has facilities in Durham and Wallingford, Conn., totaling 125,000 square feet. In addition to stamping and CNC machining/PECM (precision electro-chemical machining), we offer a host of value-added services, including laser cutting and welding, laser marking, pad printing, metal finishing, and assembly. We have a fully staffed tool design and engineering department, and large state-of-the-art tool room, and through First Step, offer rapid prototyping. We produce very complex, ultra-high precision, fully machined parts. The products we support are primarily medical device, with particular strength in endo mechanical/stapling, and increasingly, robotic surgery platforms.

We’re looking forward to beginning the First Step conversation with people who are looking for a precision prototype program for their next project.
