DePuy Synthes and the Johnson & Johnson Institute launched a mobile training lab for surgeons using the Velys robot-assisted platform.

The first-of-its-kind mobile training lab offering next-generation training directly to surgeons and their teams was launched in Sydney, Australia, according to a news release.

DePuy Synthes, the orthopaedics business unit of Johnson & Johnson, will offer on-site access to the training along with virtual reality-based operating environments and real-time collaboration at the Velys Digital Surgery Mobile Lab. All of the offerings intend to equip Australian orthopaedic surgeons with the capabilities to proficiently use the Velys robotic-assisted solution.

Velys, a first-of-its kind, table-mounted solution offers an efficient design capable of integrating into any operating room, the company said. DePuy said it adapts to a surgeon’s workflow, offers control they are used to and heps execute accurate bony cuts. Earlier this year, the platform won FDA 510(k) clearance for use with the Attune total knee system and its cleared indications for use as it became part of the broader Velys digital surgery platform of connected technologies.

The mobile training lab includes a semi-trailer mounted mobile lab with self-contained meeting, training and lab space, along with virtual reality operating environments, 3D-printed surgical models and a dedicated and personalized online learning platform.

“An increasing number of surgical procedures utilise robotic assistance,” VP of DePuy Synthes Australia Ben Travers said in the release. “It is critical to address the learning curve when adopting next-generation med tech to utilise it effectively and take advantage of its efficiencies. That’s why we’re making significant investments in next-generation training to provide comprehensive and personalized learning for the Velys robotic-assisted solution.”

DePuy Synthes said the mobile lab will begin a tour around Australia later this month.

“We’re making next-generation training easily available at a surgeon’s place of work with our ground-breaking mobile training lab and suite of solutions,” Travers added.
