Invacare (NYSE:IVC) and Alber this week launched the Smoov One power-assist solution to assist manual wheelchair users.

Smoove One is a portable, rear-mounted power add-on that uses insights of wheelchair drivers and power assist design experience to increase mobility and range while reducing stress on driver’s shoulders.

“We are excited to introduce such an innovative product to the US market. The SMOOV one is extremely beneficial to our customers’ livelihood and we have already seen great success since its launch last year in Europe. This solution has represented yet another technological leap forward for Invacare and is a great addition to our leading portfolio of mobility products,” Invacare VP of sales and marketing Joost Beltman said in a news release.

Benefits offered by the power assist include a user-friendly design with on-demand power that is easily attached and detached from rigid and folding wheelchairs whenever extra power is needed. Its quiet, brushless drive is controlled using a front-mounted ergonomic control unit that is easy to operate.

Smoov One also features a single-drive wheel that is coated with a rubber layer and has tire treads to make it easier to navigate challenging terrains. It has a 359° swivel fork for even quick turns.

The control unit gives power and control to a wheelchair driver’s fingertips and allows them to adjust speeds. Users can also download the accompanying smartphone app to extend their control. The smartphone app allows drivers to control the drive unit, set it to cruise mode, change preset drive settings, record trips, monitor battery life and view error code details.

“Our team conducted deep analysis into client insights and, with the support of a cross-disciplined team, we were then able to design a superior product that reduces shoulder wear and tear. Early client feedback has been resoundingly positive and we are thrilled to now introduce this novel solution to the US market,” Alber director of sales Sebastian Zitzler said.
